If you're into tactical RPGs get FF Tactics and Phantom Brave. Both are great games.

Well, SoulCalibur III is rated the best fighter ever for PS2. But if you're not happy with it, I have enjoyed Mortal Kombat: Deception. Virtual Figher 4: Evolution is highly rated as well (but not as good as SC3 I hear). I'm curious if your desire for a "Street Fighter" type game is due to enjoyment of 2D fighters, or if it's a ratings issue?
If you like Street Fighter, you can always get Capcom Classics Collection ($19.95) which includes over 22 games, including many versions of Street Fighter II (Champion and Hyper), along with Ghouls N Ghosts as well.
In action-adventure, a game that has been highly rated and is on my Christmas wish list, is Resident Evil 4, rated the best game for the PS2 period. Also, there's Shadow of the Colossus which is a new type of action-adventure game which is also highly rated.
For more children's oriented gameplay, Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari (the sequel) are both highly rated and enjoyable.
If you're interested in non-violent games and interactive fun, there's "Guitar Hero" (with signature guitar controller, $69.95) and also "Amplitude" which I hear is another great music game.
If you're o.k. with Mature rated games (and this should NOT be bought for anyone under 18, that's what "M" means), there's God of War. Same goes for the latest Grand Theft Auto title, San Adreas.
Other games that are both good-looking and enjoyable are Burnout: Revenge and Star Wars: Battlefront II.

the reason I dont like soul calibur cause I dont like how you have to press like funny buttons to do a combo, but in street fighter you just slide your finger you know?

Yeah I know that, I was just wondering.
And the only PS2 game you need is DDR.

The tekken series is a great fighting sort of game as well, no blades or anything like in Soul Calibur, I enjoy both Soul Calibur and Tekken, though.

Street Fighter-like fighting game? Then you should go for Guilty Gear X2, maybe best 2D-fighting ever (some may argue). Awesome artworks, accurate gameplay, interesting plot (believe it or not). You may consider "Capcom VS" and "King of Fighters" series too.
And yes Dragon Quest VIII is definitly worth it (although those changes SE made for western audience... *sigh*). But don't expect anything like "mainstream rpgs" ala Final Fantasy/Shadow Hearts, this one doesn't come full-packed with FMV's. Sure, it's pretty shiny and novice-friendly for a Draque but you probably still find it... surprising at first.
As mentionned previously, there are plenty of wonderful tacticals at the moment. Pick Disgaea or Phantom Brave : smart and fun.
(Apologies for grammar, syntax, I'm not really a fluent English speaker -_-)

The first thing I'll say: GO TO http://www.Ebgames.com as my post runs off it's UI and layout.
1st off: Games? Need I mention the endless platformers, like Vexx, Jak1/2/3, Ratchet&Clank1/2/3? I shouldn't have to too! These are games that deserve a slot in themselves.
2nd: Dragon Q8: Not too shabby, played the demo, want to try it out for real before I get it. Also, if you liked such RPGs as "Star Ocean" and the "Final Fantasy" series, Ps2 rpgs are for you.
3rd: A fighting game, like streetfighter, but not soul calibur? you have severly limited the Ps2's capabilities for fighting games. I can only recommend the later Tekken Games, and whatnot. The Ps2's vast majority of games are Platformers,RPG,Shooter games
Hope this helped you. Browse EB for more, there are tons of games just to reference

I resent that comment!
I have all three systems and thats the perk to a universally released game. =)
Plus, the GameCube has some awesome games, like tales of symphonia and Baten Kaitos. Some real gems!
It can be said of all systems, that they have great games. But the gamecube is the cheapest of them all , with cheap games and controllers, it's the poor man's gaming route.

There's only one reason to buy a PS2, and that's Final Fantasy. Nothing else that is exclusive to PS2 is at all compelling IMO, and don't even mention GTA because all the GTA's hit the Xbox later (usually with improvements over the PS2 versions). So if you don't like FF, don't bother with PS2.

Shadow of the Colossus is a good game too, weird, but good. "All you do" is fight 16 battles of You, sword, shield, and horse, vs. various colossi.
